Why Choose a Standing Seam Metal Roof?
Mantle Roofing's specialty: Englert standing seam systems installed across the Shenandoah Valley and Northern Virginia.
What Is Standing Seam Metal Roofing?
Standing seam metal roofing is a premium roofing system in which metal panels run vertically from the ridge of the roof to the eave, joined by raised seams. The fasteners are concealed beneath the seams rather than driven through the panel face — so there are no exposed screw penetrations to loosen, leak, or need re-sealing over the life of the roof.
Mantle Roofing installs Englert standing seam systems, available in a wide range of colors and finishes — from classic charcoal and slate tones to distinctive metallic finishes like the copper roof shown here.
How Long Does a Standing Seam Metal Roof Last?
Industry estimates put the service life of a standing seam metal roof at 40–70 years — roughly two to three times the typical lifespan of an asphalt shingle roof. The panels are tested for wind uplift to UL and ASTM standards, and the smooth vertical surface sheds snow effectively, a real advantage in Shenandoah Valley winters.
Because the fasteners are concealed, standing seam roofs need minimal maintenance compared to exposed-fastener metal or asphalt shingles. Reflective finishes can also reduce summer cooling loads by reflecting solar heat instead of absorbing it.
Is a Metal Roof Worth It Compared to Shingles?
Neither roofing system is automatically right for every home. Standing seam metal is a long-term investment with a longer expected service life and fewer exposed components. Asphalt shingles offer a lower initial investment and a familiar appearance. The better choice depends on your roof, ownership plans, priorities, and preferred look.
| Factor | Standing Seam Metal Our specialty | Asphalt Shingles |
|---|---|---|
| Initial investment | Higher initial investment | Lower initial investment |
| Typical service life | 40–70 years (industry estimates) | 15–30 years (industry estimates) |
| Routine maintenance | Concealed fasteners reduce re-sealing needs | Periodic attention as shingles and seals weather |
| Snow & wind | Metal panels shed snow well and have superior wind uplift resistance | Performance varies by shingle line; individual shingles can lift |
| Heat management | Reflective finishes can reduce solar heat gain | Typically absorbs more solar heat than reflective metal |
| Appearance | Clean vertical lines and a distinctive architectural profile | Traditional profile with a broad range of colors and textures |
Standing seam metal may fit best when you:
- Plan to own the home for many years and value a longer replacement cycle.
- Prioritize low routine maintenance and concealed fasteners.
- Want strong snow-shedding and wind-uplift performance.
- Prefer clean vertical lines and a distinctive architectural finish.
Asphalt shingles may fit best when you:
- Place the highest priority on a lower initial investment.
- Prefer a traditional roof profile with many color and texture options.
- Expect a shorter ownership horizon or replacement cycle.
- Want broadly available materials and familiar repair options.

How Does Mantle Roofing Install Standing Seam Roofs?
Every standing seam installation follows the same process as a full roof replacement: a free roof report and written estimate, complete tear-off to the decking, a full decking review and any needed repair, synthetic underlayment, and panel installation per the system specifications — with panels formed to the exact length of your roof, seamed in place, and finished with matching trim and flashing.
See the full eight-step process on the Roof Replacements page.
